Karen de Saint Phalle

Vice Chair

Karen received her MBA in Finance, Strategic Management and Operations Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.  She earned a MA in European Studies from Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium and a BA in International Relations and Economics from Georgetown University. At Georgetown, Karen was captain of their Division I Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field teams, as well as an All-American and member of the US Junior National Team. 

Karen began her career as an investment banking analyst at Merrill Lynch. Subsequently, she worked at Bain & Company, a strategic management consultancy, where she advised private equity and corporate clients on a broad range of business issues, including acquisition due diligence, corporate and business unit strategy, profit improvement and merger integration. Thereafter, Karen moved into private equity investments at AlpInvest Partners where she led US buyout investments, while also investing in venture capital, secondary and mezzanine funds. During the next decade, Karen provided investment and strategic advisory services to general and limited partners of private equity funds. 

Karen’s civic involvement in the Wood River Valley includes serving on the Board of the Wood River YMCA and Our Lady of the Snows Church Foundation and the Finance Committees of the Wood River Women’s Foundation and her church.  She regularly volunteers packing food at the Hunger Coalition.  In New York City, Karen has served on several boards, including the Founders’ Committee of Columbia Presbyterian Children’s Hospital (now the Children’s Advisory Council at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital), the National Hypertension Association, and as Treasurer of a private women’s club and of the Diller Quaile School of Music. Karen also served on Rockefeller University’s Parents & Science Steering Committee.  

Karen and her husband Marc fell in love with Sun Valley on their first visit in 1996, returning every year since and eventually planting a flag in 2012.  After years of spending most holidays and vacations at their Sun Valley home, in June 2016, Karen, Marc, their daughter Claire, son Remy and two Norwich terriers (Lucy and Lily) moved to Sun Valley full time. Karen loves to run. She and her family love to travel, ski, play tennis, cycle, hike, and fly fish.
