Spirit Women Ranch

Securing the missing link to permanently protect Slaughterhouse Canyon.

The Wood River Land Trust is working to permanently protect Spirit Woman Ranch—an 80-acre property in Slaughterhouse Canyon, just east of Bellevue. This critical property will ensure public access to thousands of acres of public lands in the Pioneer Mountains beyond, and prevent potential fragmentation of wildlife habitat.

Community & Conservation Benefits

Spanning over 80 acres in Slaughterhouse Canyon, just east of Bellevue, securing this property will:

  • Guarantee Public Access via Slaughterhouse Road, providing a permanent gateway to hundreds of acres of adjacent BLM lands for hunting and outdoor recreation, including popular multi-use trails.

  • Protect a Critical Wildlife Link: Located near the Owinza mule deer migration route, the ranch serves as a crucial corridor for Idaho’s iconic big game.

  • Protect Water & Climate Resilience: The property protects 1/2 mile of Slaughterhouse Creek, including a pond and rare riparian wetlands. It is ranked as "Most Resilient" by The Nature Conservancy’s Resilient and Connected Network analysis.

Why Now?

Spirit Woman Ranch is currently on the market. If sold to private interests, public access to Slaughterhouse Canyon could be cut off, closing off access to thousands of acres and threatening wildlife movement through this vital corridor. Acting now is the only way to keep this gateway open to the public and protected for future generations.

How You Can Help!

The Wood River Land Trust needs to raise $630,000 dollars by March 31 to permanently protect Spirit Woman Ranch. Thanks to commitments to our Land and River Catalyst Fund, $500,000 is already secured, leaving just $130,000 remaining to complete this important opportunity.
