Double Springs Ranch

As the snow melts off Dickey and Borah Peaks into the Pahsimeroi River Valley, natural springs form under Double Springs Ranch. Here, on a ranch in an iconic part of Idaho, Doris Tunney has taken the lead in developing and promoting best practices for conservation-friendly ranching. In 2005, she donated a conservation easement to Wood River Land Trust to forever protect and promote agricultural uses on the land while disallowing development. “We chose Wood River Land Trust as the recipient of our gift because of their long-standing history, strong ethics and values—all which align with our future vision for this special place,” says Doris Tunney, a former Board member for the Land Trust and recipient of our Founder’s Award. Double Springs is entirely surrounded by Bureau of Land Management public lands which are designated elk wintering range. By protecting her Ranch with an easement, the adjacent public lands are buffered from future subdivision that would have significant negative impact on the surrounding area. Furthermore, it allows for the continued production of locally produced food, in this case beef.
