The Sage-Grouse Are Out at Square Lake! Each spring, sage-grouse return to their preferred mating area known as a lek, where the males inflate their chest sacks, display their plumage, and woo the females in an elaborate display of avian machismo. Though sage-grouse habitat is declining throughout the west due to development, wildfire, and West Nile virus, the lek at Square Lake was protected in 2004 and birds continue their annual ritual in search of a partner.

New Resource for Floodplain Homeowners Do you live in the floodplain? If so, we hope you'll check out our new brochure on floodplain living. "Get to Know Your Closest Neighbor: A Guide for Floodplain Homeowners" has helpful information on the role of the floodplain in the river's health and on the uses of native plants to beautify and protect stream banks. The new brochure can be a valuable resource this spring as you plan improvements like new decks, additional landscaping, and other projects. Produced in partnership with local governments and landscaping companies, the brochure is available at county and municipal offices, Webb, Hailey Nursery, and Wood River Land Trust. You can also download the brochure here.
Whole Communities Whole Communities is a new partnership between Wood River Valley non-profit organizations working together to share expertise regarding growth in the Valley and to advocate for growth that benefits our community and its natural areas, residents, and wildlife. Whole Communities provides a collaborative perspective on planning issues that incorporates the experience of conservation, transportation, housing, planning, and smart growth experts to ensure that multiple perspectives are considered when government agencies seek professional resources to plan for the valley’s growth.
